Apple buys map company – Goodbye to Google Maps?

placebaseWell once you cross Apple there’s no going back, and today’s chatter confirms Apple are moving ever further away from any relationship with Google. The company had purchased Placebase, a mapping services company, back in July but the acquisition is now coming back into focus.

There is a post on GigaOm that gives a detailed comparison of  PlaceBase vs. Google Maps, customisation and tons of ways to layer multiple kinds of data sets onto maps, with an API that makes it easy to layer on data sets all come into play.

This is just another case of Apple wanting to go it alone with no reliance on third parties for their own apps. I’d agree this was a good move, if it promoted choice with a default option, however it doesn’t. There’s no doubt that Apple will remove the Google Maps app to force users to use their own.

I think Apple will dump google maps and use that 3rd party's maps instead. Apple has already rejected a few google apps. Hopefully they don't remove support for gmail.

I think they will, and have their own, it will be a shame.
