Samsung receive huge orders for flexible OLED displays

Article by on Monday, 14 May 2012

Samsung showed off the technology last year, and recently named their flexible OLED displays “Youm” with a soft release date aiming for Q4 2012.

Now things look more real with Sammy claiming they have received huge orders for the flexible display.

Samsung Electronics Chairman Kwon Oh-Hyun said the company:

“is getting “huge orders” from electronics makers for flexible AMOLED Displays by YOUM, and that they expect it to be ready for mass production in Q3 of this year”.

Now this will be the start of very long R&D cycles, and so don’t expect to see anything on the high street until probably 2015, but it shows us where the future could be heading. Think the Sony P without the big central hinge, or a new breed of clam shells, which are actually just pocket-able slate style smartphones.

Of course should they become popular we can expect a slightly higher res variant which inevitably would have been Apple’s first. But I guess we’ll have to wait and see if they’re a success before Apple invent them. [/sarcasm]
