Default T Mobile G1's first user review

Ok, androidcommunity.com have got the first user review of the G1 out in the wild.

Enjoy this short extract, full review after the break.

Android Community has done it again, this time we bring you an exclusive first time user review of T-Mobile’s G1. Forum member kaziko has given us a sneak peak at T-Mobile’s first device to run Google’s Android operating system. He put together a nice Q&A as well as providing us with a pros and cons list. The more we hear about the G1 the more anticipation builds, as we all wait for the 22nd to get our hands on this gem.

This device is very similar to the SideKick, Kaziko went on to say “Its a sidekick on massive steroids … If it had a box on the left side it would feel exactly like a Sidekick”.

This is good news for a lot of the current Sidekick users who are looking for a long awaited upgrade to a device that sees very little change. This device has great call quality and a relatively loud speaker in comparison to other HTC devices. The G1 comes pre-loaded with a smooth running, easy to use instant messaging client that supports Google Talk, AIM, ICQ and MSN out of the box.

With all phones there is a bit of a downside to them, and in Kaiziko’s words “[the] phone does not run as smoothly as you would think”. Some of the applications “stutter” as they start up and from time to time the device must be restarted in order to run smoothly. Thankfully these drawbacks can ultimately be fixed with firmware and software upgrades. The battery charger makes the bottom of the device very hot and is in an awkward location for text messaging while it is charging...

"Video playback is very limited. The G1 would not play .mpg or .wmv files which are pretty much the standard when it comes to videos downloaded off the net."

haha, what year has this guy been sent back from? I havent dled an mpg or a wmv since the 90's.

LMAO

What format do you use then?
MPG and WMV are not the most common I guess (and MPG at least is getting pretty old), I would say that that is AVI.

But WMV is still the choice for some websites and if you happen to be dealing with a Microsoft partner.

I was under the impression WMV, MPG and AVI still made up the majority of video formats (although AVI is a container, not a format, and WMV could be any version of the codec), with the rest being the idiots who opt for Quicktime (urrrrgh) or something similar.

Great reviews. I have been seriously thinking about getting the T-Mobile G-1 until I read everyones comments. It seems like there may be a lot of better options I should look into before making the move on this phone. Have you heard of the product review site, ExpoTV? It's a cool site where you can make money by posting video reviews. The marketing company I work for is actually doing a campaign for them. It's great for learning about new products as well as making money for reviewing products you own. You can check it out for a chance to win prizes/cash in time for the holidays here: tinyurl . com/4zxovz

Hey dude,

In my opinion this is the best handset out. It's pure class and has a ton of usefull features.

The app store is totally free and technically its the most feature packed handset out.

I don't actually own one but wish i did, everything is great on this phone.

Nooo, dont buy this phone, its terrible.

The OS is brilliant, and if it was on other phones such as the X1 etc it would make them a lot better.

The phone itself is clunky, fat and big and feel very plasticly. It does no feel well made at all.

My brother has one and I have the X1. I prefer the X1 build over the G1, however Android, the G1's OS is much better.

Sony are making a high end Android phone next year, Im guessing it will be the X2 or possibly X3
