Exclamation Guide To Properly Running Movies On KU990

Greeting all,

I've been reading the forums for quite some time now and have noticed that there are many guides for creating video's on the ku990 yet no one has bothered to really give a complete guide to the newbies out there.

So to make things easy for everyone i'm taking some time out to show you guys some basics in video converting!

Lets Begin:
There are 2 programs you will need for succesful conversion, I will explain how and why you need both.

Program 1: AutoGordianKnot
-----------------------------
This program allows you to convert mainly *.avi, *.mpg and dvd(vob)files. It's quite simple: Follow the steps!
Step 1: Choose input (file you want to convert), and output (new file for ku990).
Step 2: Select tracks and subtitles you might want in it.(DVD only, other subtitle formats please look below)
Step 3: Select output size. 3 options exist Predefined, Custom size and Percentage. ((I personally choose Custom size MB: 300-350MB for a normal movie [90 min], 2 pass encoding), (you can use percentage approx 40-45% to encode quicker, 1 pass-encoding))
Step 4: Advanced paramaters (MAKE SURE YOU CHANGE THE CODEC FROM XVID TO DIVX!!!) and click add Job.

Click Start when your ready to go, or repeat steps 1 to 4 and add another job. I usually add 5-6 jobs let it run over night and select the shutdown when finished checkbox.

These are the basics for this program to get you started, you can play around with the advanced settings. Also for those with courage press the CTRL-F9 keys together for hidden options!

Once you master AutoGK you can give proper gordian knot a go at www.doom9.net where you will also learn about the most powerful conversion tools in existance atm.

For those interested in inbedding subtitle files with the newly converted video:

1. Make sure you have at least AGK version2.37b installed (stability)
2. Start conversion as you normally would however do these extra steps:
3. After selecting the Input file hit Ctrl-F8 (This will bring up the subtitle load undet the Input File option.
4. Select the external subtitle file that matches your input file. (supported formats: srt, ssa, sub, vobsub) As far as I know matroska inbedding is not supported yet.
5. Proceed the rest of the normal steps as usual.

Program 2: Xilisoft Video Convertor Ultimate Ver: 5 (Find it yourself, Hint: Torrent)

This is the best universal convertor around for newbies. It's basically a point and click and the output is decent for a 1 pass program. I recommend this program for the files that AutoGK doesn't work with,(Gordian Knot Pack will work with everything, but it's a very advanced program) eg flv, rm...etc it will convert them all. Try it simply to use and better then the other "Total converter" junk programs out there.

Some Advice:

AutoGK and GK both use and convert files with whats called 2-pass encoding. This can take a little longer to encode your movie but in the long run it's the best conversion and will result in best picture (no blocks, bluriness etc). On a decent computer it doesn't take 2 long at all. I convert a stargate episode in 27 minutes and it's 150meg, 128bit stereosound and perfect picture. Remember batching! Other questions are answered by replies to users in this thread.

I'm happy to answer further questions for those interested in learning proper conversion techniques, need help or simply like, dislike my post!

Good Luck with it, hope it helps!

yeh, I use the Divx converter that came with my phone... works fine and is dead easy to use ...

That AutoGK program must produce much better results though, like he said:

Might try it out and see if there's a big difference...

Please remember this is and xvid and divx converter, it's the best one out there trust me.

Or for simple use, try the second option.

If your really into converting movies properly, then don't overlook GT.

Again, think axxo, klaxxon etc, top convertors use this program.

What video and audio bitrates are best for divx movies on the Viewty? I have just tried it for the first time with about 400k video and 96k audio using the DivX Covertor 6.8. The output file plays perfectly in Media Player Classic on my EeePC but on the Viewty there's some purple blocking at the bottom of the screen. Is a combined data rate of just over 500kbps pushing the Viewty too hard or is there another problem?

Thanks

Tez

Aha! It's not a bitrate limitation at all. I loadedthe original xvid movie onto my Viewty (after using winx2d to change the header to divx) and it runs fine - at almost twice the bitrate. The purple blocking seems to caused by the combination of the DivX Convertor software and LG's DivX player firmware.

Good old LG - their software and support lets the hardware down again.

simply download a codec pack to have both divx and xvid installed.

Go to google
Search for XP Codec pack (its free)

Download and install it.

here is a link http://www.xpcodecpack.com/

Once that is installed you should have no more problems viewing movies or encoding movies.

an alternative is the K-Lite codec pack or Gordion Knot codec pack.

Only install one pack and not all. You will then have everything you need.

Hi again for those of you who have tried my guide I have a great update.

Under the auto gordian knot settings Step 3: when choosing file size (2 pass encoding) change to target quality (in percentage): select the quality as 30 percent.

Also in step 4: advanced settings click on fixed width and set it to 400.

I have created 6 movies this way all of which are perfect quality for ku990.

This will also only do 1 pass encoding, with great results for those who are impatient.

P.S leave the audio at a minimum of 128kbps although I leave that option set to Auto.

Example results are (on laptop 2.0ghz 2 gig ram centrino):

Scorpion King: 712 meg original, after encoding 212meg
Wargames Dead Code: 701 meg original, after encoding 201 meg

Let me know if this helps
